Ian served for 24 years in the British Army with the infantry and the Army Air Corps retiring as a Captain (Late Entry) in 2006. During his career he served in Germany, Northern Ireland, the UK, and Bosnia, as well as tours to the USA, the Falkland Islands, Cyprus and Canada. He also gained numerous instructor qualifications and spent two years at the School of Army Aviation teaching on promotion courses. After a tour as RSM in Germany, he was commissioned and posted to an Apache Attack Helicopter regiment within 16 Air Assault Brigade as their Training Officer.
On leaving the army, Ian qualified as a Close Protection Officer and was employed at the US Embassy in Kabul as part of the security detail. He later worked as a Close Protection Team Leader in Afghanistan and as an Operations Officer in Iraq before joining Hawki in March 2012 as Country Manager and Chief Instructor to teach on the Hostile Environment Awareness course in Kabul. In January 2015, Ian moved back to the UK and manages HEAT training delivered in Europe and from Jordan for the Middle East.
Ian is a Fellow of the Institute of Leadership and Management (FInstLM) and is currently studying for a degree in Security and Risk Management.
